GT3 vs Hypercar: How These Two Classes Fit Together

LMDh, Le Mans Hypercar, and GT3: how these classes sit in the endurance hierarchy, how they compare technically, and what happens when they share the same circuit.

GT3 vs Hypercar: How These Two Classes Fit Together
01

What is Hypercar?

Hypercar is the top class of endurance racing, the category that runs at the front of the Le Mans 24 Hours, the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and IMSA's GTP class. It replaced the previous LMP1 class in 2021 and has attracted manufacturers including Ferrari, Toyota, Porsche, Cadillac, BMW, Alpine, and Peugeot.

There are two technical pathways to build a Hypercar:

  • Le Mans Hypercar (LMH): a purpose-built prototype with hybrid power, designed to the FIA's top-level prototype regulations
  • LMDh: a shared chassis (from one of four approved suppliers: Dallara, Ligier, Multimatic, or ORECA) combined with a manufacturer's own hybrid powertrain

Both compete together under a unified BoP system, in the same way GT3 cars from different manufacturers race each other. The result is a class with seven or eight manufacturers competing on near-equal terms, which is remarkable for a top-tier prototype category.

Technical comparison

The performance gap between Hypercar and GT3 is substantial but not as extreme as you might expect.

GT3 cars are based on road cars and carry the weight and compromises of a production platform. Hypercars are engineered from scratch purely for endurance racing. The gap in cost and complexity is enormous.

03

Speed differences

At Circuit de la Sarthe (Le Mans), the speed gap between the classes is visible and dramatic.

A top Hypercar laps Le Mans in approximately 3 minutes 22 seconds. A GT3 car in the LMGT3 class at the same event laps in approximately 3 minutes 55 to 58 seconds, roughly 33 to 35 seconds slower per lap over a 13.6km circuit.

On shorter circuits the gap narrows but remains significant. At Spa-Francorchamps (7.0km), Hypercars lap around 20 to 22 seconds faster than GT3s under race conditions.

The speed difference means GT3 cars are regularly lapped by the leading Hypercars during a 24-hour race. This "traffic management" between classes is one of the unique challenges of multi-class endurance racing, both for drivers and for viewers trying to follow multiple battles simultaneously.

04

Racing together

At the Le Mans 24 Hours and in the World Endurance Championship, GT3 and Hypercar do not just share a paddock. They race on the same circuit at the same time in separate classes.

The LMGT3 class (the WEC's GT3 category) runs concurrently with Hypercar entries. From a distance this looks chaotic (a GT3 Ferrari being swept past by a Toyota GR010 Hypercar on the Mulsanne straight) but each class is effectively running its own race, with separate classifications and podiums.

For drivers, multi-class traffic is one of the defining skills of endurance racing. A GT3 driver fighting for LMGT3 class position must manage being lapped by Hypercars without losing time to GT3 rivals. Getting that balance wrong, either blocking a Hypercar or overcorrecting and losing a GT3 rival's slipstream, can cost positions in either class.
